Week 3 in review: Galaxy S23 Ultra’s 200MP sensor is official

It should come as no surprise that the Galaxy S23 series dominated the news section, and week three was no exception.

Samsung has announced a 200MP ISOCELL HP2 sensor that will be the centerpiece of the Galaxy S23 Ultra. The imager is 1/1.3 inch in size, with 0.6 µm pixels and pixel bins of 4:1 for 1.2 µm pixels and 50MP resolution, and 16:1 for 2.4 µm pixels and 12.5MP (Samsung’s terminology is Tetra2pixel) is possible. Solved. The sensor comes with a Dual Vertical Transfer Gate (D-VTG) to avoid blown highlights. It claims to increase full well capacity by more than 33%. That means each individual pixel can collect one-third as much light before clipping. Super QPD technology recognizes both horizontal and vertical patterns, providing fast and accurate AF even in low light.

ISOCELL HP2 is the first sensor to adopt Samsung’s DSG (Dual Slope Gain) feature in 50MP mode. It applies two separate transform values ​​to the received analog signal at the pixel level, resulting in “super HDR performance”. This means that you can capture two exposures simultaneously while avoiding the risk of losing detail in traditional HDR modes. Also, this allows you to shoot 4K HDR video at 60fps.

The Galaxy S23 series uses a custom Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset with higher clock speeds called the “Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform for Galaxy”.

Reports emerged that Samsung may raise the price of the Galaxy S23 series in major markets.A day later, the same US price as the S22 series was leaked. It could mean something, or it could just be in the US, and it’s definitely February 1st.

Apple has announced a new Mac mini that can be configured with the M2 Pro and M2 Max chipsets, the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros, and new processors. The Apple M2 Pro chipset is built on the second-generation 5nm node and features 40 billion transistors, 20% more than the M1 Pro. The new chip also supports up to 32GB of unified memory at 200GB/s bandwidth. The Apple M2 Max chip has 67 billion transistors, three times more than the base M2. It also supports up to 96GB of unified memory (four times the processing power of M2) running at 400GB/s (twice as fast as M2 Pro). The CPU is the same as the 12-core version of M2 Pro. The GPU is twice the size with up to 38 cores and an even larger L2 cache.

Finally, Tecno showed off a concept phone with a rotatable foldable display that reaches 10.1 inches when fully extended, called the Phantom Vision V.
