A prototype demonstration of the new VR-enabled Android game console, Pimax Portal, is here and it’s headlining. His Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign for the console has been going since his November 15th, and has nearly doubled its funding goal at the time of writing.
It’s what you wanted when you were 10. Picking up a handheld and playing Pokémon Shield for 30 minutes he can switch to a few matches of Rocket League Sideswipe and wrap it up with a bit of virtual reality.
It might sound like a silly dream, but the manufacturer Pimax wants to make it a reality.
Its ambitious handheld Android game console, Pimax Portal, seeks to bring emulation, high-end Android gaming, 4K screens, TV docking, AR and VR capabilities all to the size of the Switch Lite.
The console is billed to use the Snapdragon XR2 and comes in both LCD and QLED screen versions.
Kickstart with caution
If you have any doubts, it’s understandable. Kickstarter launched some really cool products that wouldn’t have been possible otherwise.
Kickstarter is also where thousands of backers put money into projects that they pledged to the world, but got nothing in return, except for the harsh lesson of not trusting everything you read on the internet.
Skepticism is always healthy, especially when it comes to crowdfunding, but some recent videos have given us at least some reason to trust that the attempt is legitimate.
Some high-profile acknowledgments
Retro Gaming Youtuber Udon Taki released a video yesterday, working on a prototype version of the console. Some features seem limited in this early build, but the overall impression is good.
The fact that VR seems to work perfectly is impressive. The downside is that it only seems to work with Pimax’s own headset. This can be disappointing if you have already invested in another brand.
Too good to be real? There are some scratches, but I hope you will keep an eye on it.
