For the first time in decades, gigs at tech companies are no longer top dream destinations for local job seekers, according to a longtime Pacific Northwest recruiter.

Important reasons: Cheryl France, a senior recruiter at Seattle Corporate Search, told Axios.

Big picture: Based on recent interviews in France with hundreds of applicants in the Seattle area, the allure of jobs at new technology start-ups and established giants like Twitter, Meta, Amazon and Microsoft was once tremendous. It was synonymous with stocks that make millionaires with no paychecks, but has recently faded sharply. For the past 3 months.

  • Tech layoffs began to spike in November. By the end of the year, 150,000 tech jobs were lost.
  • More job cuts are expected this year as tech companies now say they got too optimistic about hiring during the pandemic.
  • For some recruiters at healthcare, insurance, and real estate companies, for example, this may be good news. For example, she used to struggle to get top tech talent, she said.

Portland-based Laura Trujillois a recruiter for a company that offers services that include a global satellite navigation system, and as workers who may have never considered industries other than technology now broaden their search, I found it easier to sell my open positions.

  • In addition to job security, Mr. Trujillo said candidates are supported by generous employer-paid health insurance and other benefits.
  • The wide range of career growth opportunities in a company with a global reach, with a wide range of services and products, is also very attractive, she said.
