Seoul, January 26 (UPI) — South Korean chip maker SK hynix has announced that it has successfully developed the world’s fastest mobile DRAM. This is a chip that can download multiple movies in one second.
The Seoul-based company said samples of its dynamic random access memory chips were sent to customers on Wednesday, with mass production planned for the second half of this year.
According to SK Hynix, the world’s second largest chip maker, the chip will be called LPDDR5T and will run at a data speed of 9.6 Gigabits per second, 13% faster than the previous generation mobile DRAM.
The product comprises a multi-chip package designed to process 77 GB of data per second, fast enough to transmit 15 Full HD movies per second.
The new chip also boasts ultra-low power consumption.
SK hynix vice president Ryu Sung-soo said the company will continue to work on developing mobile DRAM products with different storage capacities.
“With the development of LPDDR5T, we are meeting customer demand for ultra-high performance products,” he said in a statement.
“We remain committed to developing new technologies that will help us continue to be a leader in next-generation semiconductors and a game-changer in the IT world.”
Observers point out that the increasing number of handheld gadgets makes mobile DRAM speed even more important.
Professor Han Tae Hee of Sungkyunkwan University in Seoul told UPI News Korea:
“As a result, there will be more competition to produce faster mobile DRAM that consumes less power,” he said.
SK Hynix shares rose 4.34% on Wednesday and 0.98% on Thursday on the Korea Stock Exchange.
