Samsung has reportedly started developing a MicroLED display for smartwatches. The company plans to complete development of a new smartwatch display solution this year, reports South Korean publication ETNews. Currently, we only manufacture OLED screens for smartwatches. MicroLED screens are only found on the company’s high-end TVs.
Next-gen Samsung smartwatches could feature MicroLED displays
According to a new report, Samsung Display has formed a new team to work on MicroLED solutions for smartwatches. Perhaps the new team could be responsible for creating her MicroLED displays for all kinds of mobile devices. Last October, South Korean media reported that the company preferred his MicroLED panel to his OLED solution for its AR (augmented reality) headset.
MicroLED has many advantages over OLED. These screens are brighter and boast better contrast ratios. In addition, color reproducibility is high, and visibility is improved under direct sunlight. In addition, it consumes significantly less power than OLED solutions, allowing the device to work longer on his single charge. It also works efficiently over a wide temperature range. These properties make MicroLED a suitable display solution for mobile devices such as smartphones, smartwatches, and AR headsets.
However, manufacturing high-resolution MicroLED displays is a difficult task. It’s also more expensive than OLED. However, Samsung seems to have found an efficient way to manufacture his MicroLED displays for smartwatches. The company reportedly set a goal this year to get the technology out of its R&D office and make it commercially available as soon as possible. Even if it’s not this year’s Galaxy Watch 6 series, we might see MicroLED displays in smartwatches in 2024.
Note that the MicroLED displays found in Samsung’s high-end TVs are manufactured by Samsung Electronics, not Samsung Display. These are his two separate business units of the Korean conglomerate. They operate independently of each other and are in a trading relationship. This is the first time Samsung Display develops his MicroLED solution. And that starts with smartwatches, not larger panels.
Samsung Display may not want to lose business from Apple
The news that Samsung is making MicroLED displays for smartwatches comes shortly after reports that Apple plans to switch to MicroLED for future smartwatches. Apple had sourced his OLED needs from the South Korean giant, so this would mean a big loss of business for the latter. After all, iPhone makers are the global leaders in the smartwatch market, accounting for about 30% of all wrist wearables sold each year. It remains to be seen if Samsung Display will be able to prepare his MicroLED solution for smartwatches in time for Apple’s planned switch from OLED.
