Samsung rolls out December update to Galaxy S10 series

Samsung’s December security update is now available for more Galaxy phones in the US. The company has released the latest security patches for the Galaxy S10 series and the carrier-locked Galaxy A53 5G.

The December SMR (Security Maintenance Release) for the Galaxy S10 series in the US is currently limited to carrier-locked units. Samsung is seeding a new security patch with firmware version G97*USQS8IVL1, reports SamMobile. The handset has no new features or enhancements, but his latest SMR contains many vulnerability fixes. The company mentions as many as 80 patches in its updated security bulletin earlier this month.

As usual, this month’s SMR includes patches specific to Galaxy as well as patches for vulnerabilities affecting the entire Android ecosystem. The latter concerns the various partner components that Android OEMs use to manufacture their smartphones. This includes everything from the Android OS and other Google apps and services to hardware components from Qualcomm, MediaTek, and others. All devices with vulnerable components are at risk of being compromised by remote attackers. Worse, several flaws patched this month could allow remote code execution.

Thankfully, if you have an aging Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10+, or Galaxy S10 5G in the US, these security fixes are now readily available. Received December SMRs in several markets. Note that 2019 Samsung flagships are not eligible for Android 13. It also no longer provides monthly security updates. Samsung downgraded the phone to quarterly updates earlier this month. The lineup ends with Android 12, with several security updates in the meantime.
