A team of researchers has developed a new Android app to help people reach the recommended goal of eating five servings of fruits and vegetables a day.
It informs users if they are eating the right portions and the right foods to meet recommended guidelines, according to a study from Bournemouth University in the UK.
“Most people know they need to eat five servings a day. It’s become clear that many people don’t know what it is, and they don’t realize they need to eat five different things,” says Katherine Apple, a professor of psychology at Bournemouth University. Ton said.
“Our study also showed that people with less knowledge consumed less fruits and vegetables,” she added.
Statistics from Public Health England show that only one-third of adults and 12 percent of 11- to 18-year-olds eat the recommended amount.
The free “SMART-5-A-DAY” app is specifically designed to help people understand their portion sizes and see how the amount of fruit and vegetables they eat contributes to their daily goals. was created in
Users select the fruit or vegetable they just ate and are prompted to enter how much they ate.
The app will then tell you if the amount is a full or partial portion and how much is needed to make it a full portion.
It also tracks your total progress toward your goal five times a day.
“What’s unique about this app is that it not only tracks your daily fruit and vegetable intake, but also tells people about portion sizes so they know what they need to eat.” said Appleton.
