Qi2 wireless charging standard could bring MagSafe to Android devices

The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) has announced Qi2, a new wireless charging standard that aims to unify the industry and introduce a common standard for wireless and relentless mobile devices and wearables. For the Qi2, WPC has developed a new Magnetic Power Profile based on Apple’s MagSafe technology.

Qi is the de facto global standard for providing wireless charging for small personal electronic devices. There are now over 9,000 Qi-certified products on the market, and over 350 members of the Wireless Power Consortium will continue to contribute devices compliant with the standard. Qi2 is the successor to Qi.

Like Apple’s MagSafe, the new Magnetic Power Profile ensures your phone or other rechargeable device perfectly matches the charging device for improved energy efficiency and faster charging.

Apart from magnetic alignment, Qi2 also enables device makers to develop faster wireless charging solutions while ensuring safety. Qi2 also enables new kinds of product innovation. The magnetic locking feature eliminates the need for face-to-face connections, supporting new product form factors such as AR/VR headsets. It also supports new kinds of accessories that attach to devices with magnets, like wireless batteries.
