French-Canadian game developer Ubisoft is currently working on two Far Cry projects. One is a single player experience called Project Blackbird and the other is a standalone multiplayer game called Project Maverick. These two projects were originally one, but were split into separate experiences during development.
The multiplayer game Project Maverick is set in the Alaskan wilderness and is described as an escape-based shooter with mechanics such as a permadeath, a backpack system, contracts, lootable chests, and escape zones. This suggests that Project Maverick is similar to titles such as Escape from Tarkov and The Cycle. These projects are scheduled for release in Fall 2025, but may change before then. It marks a departure from the series’ previous focus of casual, exploration-focused cooperative gameplay.
