After introducing this feature last February, Google Voice for Android and iOS removed Smart Reply suggestions that appeared at the bottom of messages.
This simple feature looked at the last received message and suggested up to three contextual replies. These pills will appear above the “Type your message” field and will instantly send a Smart Reply when tapped.
Google Voice’s release notes on the Play Store and App Store confirm the removal: “Smart Reply is no longer supported.” No other explanation. This appears to be a server-side change, as smart replies stopped appearing prior to the latest Google Voice update (2023.01.09) (version 2022.12.26).
You can receive Smart Reply suggestions as part of your notifications, but this is an Android feature. Google may view it as a system-level feature rather than something that should be implemented per app. Smart Reply is still available in Google Messages, Gmail, and even Google Docs comments.
This is a bizarre removal and may be due to Google first seeing Voice as a corporate calling service for businesses and retailers/stores.Continued lack of support for RCS As you can tell, texting may not be a priority.
