Launching at the end of 2022, OpenAI has released ChatGPT for free in research preview format.
However, the company only offers this as an online tool, although experts now warn that multiple scammers are packaging ChatGPT into usable apps with mobile-friendly interfaces. , many of these unofficial apps are riddled with problems.
Fake ChatGPT app
For us, a quick search for “GPT” in the iOS App Store brought one app to the top of all results. it’s an ad. It says it uses OpenAI’s free GTP-3 technology, but offers a £7.99 monthly subscription to unlock “full monthly access” to the essentially free service. .
Another app further down the search results has an average of 4.7 stars with over 900 total reviews. It’s also GPT-3 powered and offers paid subscriptions from Lite to Pro to Advanced. The most expensive one is £12.99 per month. You can find this same app on the Google Play Store, offers a paid subscription, and boasts an equally high 4.5 star rating (with around 300 reviews).
Beyond apps that explicitly claim to be built on GPT technology, Mac Rumors (opens in new tab) Reportedly found one app it claims: “[gave] It appears to be the official ChatGPT bot app, but it doesn’t seem to have anything to do with Open AI, the creators of ChatGPT, or the bot itself. ”
It charges $7.99 per week for ad-free access, ranks #2 on the App Store productivity charts, and has over 12,000 reviews.
The app has since been removed. tech radar pro has reached out to Apple for further comment on how it scrutinizes apps that are listed on the App Store and subsequently charted. OpenAI did not immediately respond to our request for more information about the thinking behind such an app.
