Daily Authority: 💻 USB cable length matters

⛄ Good morning. Welcome to the Daily Authority on Tuesday. The temperature here in Scotland is -8 degrees right now, which oddly means it’s too cold for snow. I want more snow!

What is the length of the USB cable?

Moga XP5 X Plus Review Micro USB to USB Cable Long

If you’ve ever wondered how long your USB cable will last, now is the time to find out. Our Zak Kahn did a deep dive to answer the question.

“The maximum length of a USB cable depends on which version of the USB standard it was designed for and whether it is an active or passive cable. Connector styles such as USB-A and USB-C are not necessarily indicative of the version or maximum length. Please note that the following are the maximum passive cable lengths depending on the version of USB they were designed for.

  • USB 1.1: 5 meters (16 feet)
  • USB 2.0: 5 meters (16 feet)
  • USB 3.0: 2 to 3 meters (6.5 feet to 9 feet, 10 inches)
  • USB 3.1: 3 meters (9 feet, 10 inches)
  • USB 3.2: 3 meters (9 feet, 10 inches)
  • USB 4: 0.8 meters (31 inches)

Remember, just because a manufacturer claims their cables work with different USB standards doesn’t mean they’re right. If a cable is very cheap but claims to meet high speed specs, beware. We always recommend buying from a reputable and reputable manufacturer.

why is there a maximum length?

  • Besides active and passive USB cables, other factors such as the thickness of the cable’s metal conductors also play a role.
  • If your USB cable is also sending HDMI, DisplayPort, Thunderbolt, or other signals, that’s also a problem.
  • Passive cables do not amplify the signal, so the longer the cable, the weaker the transmitted signal.
  • In other words, a cable that is too long (or too long and too thin) can cause data loss and slow speeds.
  • Long cables also increase the risk of noise from other devices overwhelming the data signal.
  • Zak explains:
  • Length is slightly less of an issue with active cables (cables that contain circuitry to amplify the signal), as stronger signals can travel farther without degradation.
  • However, active cables cost more. They may also come with their own power supply.

Exceeding maximum cable length

Active cables can be extended to a certain level.

  • For USB 2.0, this is typically 30 meters (98 feet).
  • For USB3.0, 3.1. 3.2, which is about 18 meters (59 feet).
  • Active USB 4 cables are still being introduced, but now reach about 3 meters (9 feet, 10 inches).
  • Alternatively, you can use a powered USB hub that plugs into a USB port and connect the long cable to the hub.

Toilet Flush John Crimaldi

The next time you use a public restroom, you’re sure to think of something like this…

  • We know that when you flush the toilet, the spray scatters, sending aerosolized poop, water, and even viruses into the air.
  • Now scientists at the University of Colorado in Boulder have visualized this.
  • The team used a continuously pulsed green laser and a camera to create a thin vertical sheet of bright green light aimed at the toilet.
  • This sheet glowed after flushing a commercial toilet to reveal an aerosol spray.
  • You can read more about the team’s results in the paper.Commercial toilets emit a vigorous, rapidly spreading aerosol plumewas published in scientific report.
  • Researchers found the “powerful chaos jet” to reach heights of about 5 feet (1.5 meters) and reach a maximum velocity of 6.6 feet (2 meters) per second within 8 seconds of the flash being activated. .
  • Larger particles, which in this study were 5 to 10 micrometers, fall out of the vapor cloud faster.
  • Small particles can remain in the air or adhere to bathroom surfaces.
  • Ewww.

Have a great Tuesday!
