CES 2023: Qi2 is bringing MagSafe to Android later this year

The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) has announced a new standard for wireless charging called Qi2 at CES 2023.

Qi2 is a new standard that aims to unify the mobile industry under a global standard for convenience and efficiency when it comes to charging mobile devices and wearables.

According to the press release:

“Consumers and retailers have told us they are confused about which devices are Qi certified and which devices claim to work with Qi but are not Qi certified. It can lead to poor user experience and safety issues,” said Paul Struhsaker, Executive Director of the Consortium. “Our standards assure consumers that their devices are safe, efficient and interoperable with other brands. Qi2 will become the global standard for wireless charging, giving consumers and retailers that assurance. will provide.”

Apple is a member of the WPC, and Qi2 is built from MagSafe technology, which Apple has standardized on the iPhone 12, iPhone 13, and iPhone 14 lineup. However, Qi2 doesn’t use his MagSafe specifically, but the new Magnetic Power Profile. This allows cell phones and other rechargeable battery-powered mobile products to work perfectly with charging devices, improving both energy efficiency and charging speed. Think of Magnetic Power Profile as a version of MagSafe that Google, Samsung, or other companies could easily implement into their devices.

Qi2 will effectively replace the current Qi standard for wireless chargers when it launches in late 2023. The new standard will also open up a market for accessories that aren’t compatible with the current flat surface of charging pads. The first Qi2-certified phones and chargers are expected to arrive in time for the 2023 holiday season. is.

The improved energy efficiency of the Qi2 standard not only enables faster charging for certain devices, but also allows for safer, more energy efficient, faster charging without damaging or shortening your device’s battery life. Paving the way for fast wireless charging speeds. itself.

“Energy efficiency and sustainability are on everyone’s mind these days,” says Struhsaker. “Qi2’s perfect alignment improves energy efficiency by reducing the energy loss that can occur when a phone or charger is misaligned. Equally important, Qi2 , significantly reduces landfill waste associated with replacing wired chargers due to broken plugs and the stress on cords from daily plugging and unplugging.”

MagSafe is one of my favorite features in the recent iPhone lineup. We hope this Qi2 certification for future wireless charging accessories will be as universal as his MagSafe for Android devices. At least it looks like it’s happening now.
