BMW iDrive 9 Announced, Runs On Android And Is Coming In Two Months

Well it was fast. BMW has already unveiled its next-generation infotainment system with the iDrive 8 a few years ago in his iX electric SUV. At his CES 2023 in Las Vegas, Bavaria got his first glimpse of his Android-powered iDrive 9. The X1 compact crossover will be moving to the latest OS in a few months, so it’s coming sooner than expected.

according to our associates BMW blog, the first new model with iDrive 9 from the factory will be the next-generation X2. Some models will be updated to iDrive 8.5, so not all models will migrate to the revamped operating system in the near future. Why not switch all your cars to iDrive 9? It’s not that simple, as vehicles like the latest 7-series run on Linux-based systems, so the coding is significantly different.

However, the user experience is very similar. Although similar in functionality, his Android app store for iDrive 9 is not planned for cars that work with iDrive 8.5. The 7er is also due to be updated to the iDrive 8.5 later this year, even though the flagship model launched a few months ago.

Let’s not forget that the Munich-based automaker first announced plans to adopt the Android Automotive OS in mid-2022 for the 9 2 Series Active Tourer.

In addition, future MINI models will migrate as well, but with a different visual interface than BMW. iDrive 9 is said to be “content-driven” and will support 3D navigation and “flexible touch layouts”, though details are unknown at this time.
