If confirmed, Subramanian, who will replace Allison J. Nathan, will be the first South Asian judge to serve on a strong bench.
Subramanian’s nomination was first announced by the White House in September 2022.
Unable to confirm it in the last Congress, the White House sent his nomination on Monday, along with the lawsuits of several other district court candidates, to the Senate for reconsideration.
Born in Pittsburgh in 1979 to Indian immigrant parents, Subramanian is now a partner at Susman Godfrey LLP in New York, where he has worked since 2007.
“Arun has been actively involved in a variety of important Susman Godfrey matters. According to Susman Godfrey’s Subramanian online profile, Arun has a track record of success regardless of the arena.
Subramanian has represented both plaintiffs and defendants in various litigation and specializes in complex civil litigation at both trial and appeal levels.
Senator Charles Schumer was the first to recommend the Subramanian name for the Southern District of New York to the Biden administration last June.
“Arun Subramanian is a staunch consumer protection expert who has spent his legal career defending consumers and individuals harmed by unjust and unlawful practices, including whistleblowers.” Schumer said in a statement dated June 9, 2022.
“He also advocates for victims of child pornography trafficking. Additionally, his experience as a clerk for the late Judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg and two other federal judges adds to his breadth and depth of law. It just added to my expertise.”
In 2001, Subramanian graduated with honors from Case Western Reserve University.
He then attended Columbia Law School, where he was a James Kent Scholar and a Harlan Fisk Stone Scholar.
