The ZenFone 9 is the perfect phone to upgrade from your Pixel 5a 5G. Those are actually the main reasons I’m comparing these two phones.

That being said, I’ll list those specs side by side first. Following that, we compare phones in several categories. Compare designs, displays, performance, battery life, camera performance, and audio. Before we start, it should be noted that the ZenFone 9 is technically a flagship grade phone. The Pixel 5a 5G, on the other hand, was mid-range at launch.

ASUS ZenFone 9 vs Google Pixel 5a 5G: Design

From the front, the two devices look very similar, but here they are the only similarities. Both phones feature a flat display with a display camera hole in the upper left corner. There’s also a fairly thin bezel and physical buttons on the right side, but not in the same order or location. The ZenFone 9 pairs a metal frame with a polymer backplate. The Pixel 5a has a unibody construction made of aluminum, but has a coating over it that doesn’t feel like metal.

Honestly, both phones are less slippery than the usual metal-and-glass slabs you usually get these days. The ZenFone 9 has flat sides, chamfered edges, and a nearly flat back. The sides of the Pixel 5a are much more curved in comparison. ZenFone 9 has a fingerprint scanner on the side, built into the power/lock key. The Pixel 5a 5G’s fingerprint scanner is on the back.

The backplate definitely looks different and feels different at the same time. On the back of the ZenFone 9 he has two camera islands, each reserved for his one camera sensor. The Pixel 5a 5G also has two cameras on the back, but both are part of the same camera island. The ZenFone 9 is considerably shorter and narrower than the Pixel 5a 5G, and a little thicker and lighter. Both phones feel great in the hand, but I prefer the ZenFone 9 build. The phone also feels more premium in your hand.

ASUS ZenFone 9 vs Google Pixel 5a 5G: Display

ZenFone 9 features a 5.9-inch Full HD+ (2400 x 1080) Super AMOLED display with a refresh rate of 120Hz. Its panel supports HDR10+ content and is flat. For your reference, you can also get a peak brightness of up to 1,100 nits. We’re looking at a 20:9 display aspect ratio here, which is protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass Victus.

The Pixel 5a 5G, on the other hand, incorporates a 6.34-inch fullHD+ (2400 x 1080) 60Hz panel. This is a flat OLED display and supports HDR content. Also, the display has a 20:9 aspect ratio, but at a lower ppi than the ZenFone 9. By the way, this display is protected by Gorilla Glass 3. Needless to say, it doesn’t offer as good as the ZenFone 9. Gorilla Glass 3 is prone to micro-scratches, at least in our experience.

That being said, both of these panels look great. They show vivid colors and have good viewing angles. The ZenFone 9’s panel does look a little better, though, as the colors seem a little more punchy. This panel also offers a higher refresh rate, unlike the 60Hz panel on the Pixel 5a 5G. Besides, the ZenFone 9’s display offers better protection in case you don’t plan on using a screen protector.

ASUS ZenFone 9 vs Google Pixel 5a 5G: Performance

The ASUS handset is powered by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC. It’s still one of the best processors on the market. On top of that, ASUS also included up to 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 flash storage. The Pixel 5a 5G on the other side is powered by the Snapdragon 765G SoC. When the phone launched it was a mid-range SoC, but it’s pretty outdated at this point, and Google has also included his UFS 2.1 flash storage here.

The Pixel 5a 5G still performs very well, but it doesn’t quite compare to the ZenFone 9. Whether it’s less intensive tasks like opening and closing apps, or more intense tasks like editing images and videos, or even gaming, the ZenFone 9 goes through it all with ease. , the Pixel 5a 5G still holds its own, but is noticeably faster in direct comparison.

Yes, you can play games on the Pixel 5a 5G, but don’t expect the most demanding titles to be buttery smooth. The ZenFone 9, on the other hand, can handle pretty much anything you throw at it. This should come as no surprise given the sheer hardware power ASUS has pushed here.

ASUS ZenFone 9 vs Google Pixel 5a 5G: Battery

The ZenFone 9 has a 4,300mAh battery, while the Pixel 5a 5G has a 4,680mAh battery. Some may be quick to scoff at these battery sizes as they’re less than 5,000mAh, but be aware that these phones don’t have tablet-sized displays. It also includes a processor with very good power consumption. In fact, these two phones offer much better battery life than many phones that are noticeably larger than them.

The ZenFone 9 has probably the best battery life among mainstream phones with displays under 6 inches. With its size in mind there is not much competition in the flagship segment. If you are not a gamer the phone can get up to 8 hours of screen on time. We were able to hit that time. On the flip side, the Pixel 5a 5G can even surpass it. During our testing, we were able to hit the screen-on-time mark of nine hours. Please be careful.

If you’re worried about charging, ZenFone 9 matters. Supports 30W wired charging and 5W reverse wired charging. Pixel 5a 5G only offers 18W wired charging. The good news is that both phones come with chargers so you don’t have to buy them separately. not.

The ZenFone 9 tends to offer a bit more saturation in shots while relying more on sharpness than the Pixel 5a 5G. There is also Both phones do very well in low light, but the ultra-wide cameras are also very good. I’m catching up. However, his FoV is smaller than the Pixel 5a.

In the video recording department, ZenFone 9 is the winner. Its footage is more stable and generally better overall. We preferred the Pixel 5a 5G for photos and the ZenFone 9 for video, but overall, both phones are really good.

Both of these devices have stereo speakers. These speakers can get loud enough with minimal distortion, and while I prefer the output coming from the ZenFone 9 speakers, the sound sounds a bit clearer and richer.

The ZenFone 9 also has an audio jack, which the Pixel 5a 5G does not. If you want a wired audio connection, you’ll have to resort to the Type-C port at the bottom. If you prefer wireless connectivity, the ZenFone 9 offers Bluetooth 5.2 and the Pixel 5a 5G supports Bluetooth 5.0.
