Asia’s Mobile Infrastructure Encounters Several Obstacles in 5G Deployment

Most Asian countries have completed 5G trials, and some have launched commercial services. However, there are still some holdouts waiting to see when (or if) there will be enough demand to advance the next generation of mobile services. As such, 5G deployments are still scattered across the region.
Some countries have adopted aggressive deployment schedules (often due to government requests to improve accessibility to high-speed broadband services as a way to boost economic growth), while others have taken a wait-and-see approach. Some countries are happy with that.
This latter situation is common when mobile penetration in general is still growing, or when LTE networks have excess capacity to meet the current demand for data consumption.
Another complicating factor frequently encountered around Asia is the lack of available spectrum for 5G. Many countries have been forced to reprocure spectrum from other uses (such as broadcasting). It has also been forced to completely shut down its GSM and 3G networks to make room for high-speed services, as is the case in Australia.
MNOs have also had to delay 5G rollout plans while waiting for their home telecom regulators to issue licenses or hold spectrum auctions.
On the other hand, governments are often reluctant to move forward without first getting assurances that 5G-friendly spectrum bidding will reach the minimum level required (previous investments in 4G spectrum).
