Back when mobile phones were still in development, it felt like a distant fantasy. A 1963 Mansfield News Journal article recently went viral on the Internet, revealing how people perceived smartphones at the time.

According to the post, a 1963 newspaper article claimed that in the future, people around the world would be able to carry mobile phones in their pockets. The article, titled “The future will allow you to carry your cell phone in your pocket,” also included a representative image of a mobile device carried by women that looks exactly like a modern flip phone.
The viral newspaper article was published in The New Journal, Mansfield, Ohio, on April 18, 1963. The post advised readers not to assume the technology would be released anytime soon, as it is still in the lab, according to the report. Newspaper articles circulating on the Internet were shared in the Photo History Twitter feed.
“This phone is a long way off commercially,” said Frederick Hanstmann, commercial manager for the telephone company.
According to the news article, “One day mainfielders will carry their phones in their pockets.” But don’t expect to have access tomorrow. It’s working and carriers can make and answer calls from anywhere.”
Since the 1980s, mobile phones have become commercially available.
For those of you who don’t know, cell phones didn’t hit the market until the 1980s. It was decades after the news story appeared in the newspaper.
Initially, Nikola Tesla was one of the major pioneers who predicted that people around the world would be able to quickly connect with each other using technology that easily fit in the pocket of a vest.
The viral newspaper article also claimed that the device would enable features such as loudspeakers, so that even if a person was doing something, they would still be able to chat via the loudspeaker phone.
“Other phones of the future will include loudspeaker phones and video phones for kitchens. Kitchen instruments can be used as regular phones, as loud phones when housewives are busy preparing meals, or It can be used as a home intercom station,” read a newspaper clipping.
